Linux in your pocket – Pendrivelinux 2008
For last few days i was in search of a Linux distro which i could install and use from my 1 GB pen-drive. By install and use, i meant to say that i could use it as a normal operating system to save my documents, bookmarks and install my favorite applications (persistent install). I tried many distro DSL, Wolvix to name a few. But, winner of them all was Pendrivelinux 2008.
What were my primary requirements?
- Should detect my WiFi and Wired networks
- Should install on my 1 GB pen-drive
- Should detect different monitor resolutions on different computers
- Retain my files, folders, application after every reboot
- Must have a good window manager
- Should be easy to install
Visit here for guide to install Pendrivelinux 2008 from windows on a pen-drive. The installation is quite simple and does not involve any command to be entered from console (or dos prompt).
After installing and testing it for days, i was very much satisfied and all my above requirements were met. Apart from the above requirements it also had certain useful features.
- Can be easily emulated via qmenu from WindowsXP ( useful for those computer which cannot be booted from USB but does not support Vista)
- Very easy installation
- KDE acts as a perfect window manager
Though i could not enable cube effect but i think this distro has all the qualities i was looking for. I also recomment this distro to the people who want to try out linux for the first time. You do not have to waste a CD even to try this one out.
So, make your Pendrivelinux and use it where ever you go (office, college, friends place). Here is a screenshots of Pendrivelinux emulated on Windows XP via qmenu.
