It has been few months since my last day of college. I miss my college very much, but the things I miss the most are those software/games. Be it DOTA or IP Messenger which tweeted twenty times in a minute. In this post I will familiarize you with most of them. Excuse me if I am a bit nostalgic and praise them above par, but most of them deserve it.
IP Messenger
This is a pop up style LAN Messenger for multi platforms. It is based on TCP/IP(UDP). It does not require server machine. Simple, lightweight, and compact size. This small tools which resides in the taskbar does all the work of an efficient LAN Messenger and supports files/folder trasfer at lighting speed. Can’t imagine network without it.
Your Freedom
Most of the colleges are behind a proxy, and block various traffic or websites. The Your Freedom services makes accessible what is unaccessible to you, and it hides your network address from those who don’t need to know. Just download the client application and install or just run it on your PC.
JAP
JAP makes it possible to surf the internet anonymously and unobservably. It is better and faster than Your Freedom, if you can make it work.
Ventrilo
Ventrilo is best known for it’s superior sound quality and minimal use of CPU resources so as not to interfere with day to day operations of the computer or during online game competitions. Most of the games come with inbuilt VOIP but games like Warcraft and Ages of Empire benefit a lot from it.
Qtracker
If you’ve ever played a multiplayer game on your PC, the in-game server browser has probably left you wanting more. Qtracker lets you say goodbye to the in-game browser, forever! From the convenience of one program you can manage all of the games you play, whether they’re on the Internet or your LAN, without ever having to load a game. Find your friends, find new servers, watch games in progress, administer servers, and tons more.
This is a must for all LAN Gamers in the campus.
Warkeys ( for Warcraft III and DOTA )
A must have for Warcraft III and DOTA players. Go and get it noobs!
Now, the next one I never used it in college but it for the people who miss their multiplayer games over LAN.
Garena
Formerly knows as ggclient, Garena works on the concept of LAN over the internet. You might have visited a chat room, it is quite similar to it but in addition your favourite multiplayer comes in to play. Now you don’t chat, you play. Warcarft III, DOTA, Conter Stike have a lot of players, there are other popular multiplayer games too.
I am quite sure you might have used them before, but if you haven’t try them, especially if you are in a campus hooked over LAN.

There are many media players available today. In this post I will be considering only audio playing features. I have listed 7 audio players which I have used and all of them are very different from each other. Read on and see which one suites your taste.
1. foobar2000 – For the people who believe in Simple Living Great Thinking.
- Windows only
- Freeware
- Minimalistic Interface
- Minimum resource hungry
- Very easy to manage playlist
2. Winamp – For faithful people who still use Winamp. I remember it as my first audio player back in 2001 (downloaded lots of skins over my slow dailup connection then).
- Windows only
- Freeware/shareware
- Quite bulky interface (highly customizable)
- Loads of Skins and Plug-ins available
- Nice Media Manager
3. iTunes – Own any of the apple products, then iTunes is a MUST!
- Windows and Mac
- Freeware
- Cool Interface (Apple rules GUI)
- Resource Hungry
- Very Extensive Media Library
- Have a High End Machine, then go for it.
4. Windows Media Player – For all the lazy people out there.
- Windows only (name says it all)
- Freeware (Windows License needed)
- Good Interface
- Not a bad option if have codecs installed
5. Songbird – For all the Open Source Community.
- Cross platform
- Open Source (GPL)
- iTunes + Firefox like interface
- Has every ingredients of great audio player
6. Rythmbox – Best there is for Gnome.
- Linux only
- Open Source (GPL)
- Inspired by iTunes
- Does a pretty decent job
7. Amarok – Power packed as is KDE.
- Lunix and Windows (through KDE)
- GPL
- Very good inteface compliments KDE in every way
- Loads of Features
I am currently using Winamp + VLC + WMP + Klite codec for all my media playing needs. What audio player do you prefer?

Lately, I have been designing a wordpress theme. In order pick right colors, I needed a eye dropper tool to pick color on my desktop. So, my search began for such a tool. After trying few tool I landed upon Instant Eyedropper. A very simple and handy tool which occupies minimum workspace (resides in taskbar) when designing.
- Move the mouse pointer to the Instant Eyedropper icon in the system tray.
- Press and hold the left mouse button and move the mouse pointer to the pixel whose color you want to identify.
- Release the mouse button.
- That’s it. The clipboard now contains the color code – in HTML format (or any other format that you have previously specified). It can be pasted and used in any text or HTML editor or the Color Picker tool of Photoshop.

With Google entering the battle, it has moved to the next level. Before the start of the month, Firefox was defending its throne by modest competitors IE by microsoft and Safari by apple.
Now, the war is about speed. Who is the fastest? One, way of measuring speed is by the time each takes to load JavaScript. Google Chrome uses V8 JavaScript engine, which is considered to be fastest till date. Here is the CNET results, in which Chrome is ahead big time.
But, Firefox did not stay as a mere spectator with all this hype Chrome is getting over its speed. Firefox is ready to fight Chrome with its new JavaSript engine TraceMonkey. It is likely to be available with Firefox next release 3.1. JavaScript and Mozilla CTO Brendan Eich wrote in his blog entry “We win by 1.28x and 1.19x, respectively. Maybe we should rename TraceMonkey “V10″ 
”. The results released by Brendan Eich, just shows that the war is going to become much intense in the time to come.
One thing for sure, we as a user will be benefited by the battle in any case. Lets see who emerges victorious.

Yes, the much awaited google web browser Google Chrome is out few hours back. Yet, it is not available for linux now. So, i had to boot to Vista after a long time. So, lets look at some of its pros and cons.
Pros
- Clean and simple GUI – The GUI is very well designed. The clean GUI provides a bigger viewport. Tabs moved to the title bar helps the cause. Yet, the GUI is simple but it is very much stylish too.
- New Tab – The New Tab which contains Most visited webpages thumbnail, is quite appealing.
- Address Bar – The Address Bar integrated with web search and web history beats the Firefox 3 and IE 8 which do not contain web search.
- Tabbing – The tabbing system with some cool effect and tittle bar postioning is good. The feature to drag a tab to make a new window and new tab opens next to parent tab also is very good. Although, i liked the tabbing feature of IE 8 better because of colouring of tabs.
- Incognito Mode – Quite similar to privacy mode of IE 8, this is very helpful for those who use others pc frequently for browsing.
- Downloads – Downloads starts at bottom of the page and shows download status.
- Memory – The memory consumed is almost half that of Firefox 3 and IE 8.
- Application Shortcut – Handy tool for making shortcuts for webpages on the desktop. Quite useless for me, i like to hide my desktop icons.
- Task Manager – The taskmanager give details of memory and cpu uses for every page. Quite helpful for web developers.
Cons
- Addons – No addons. This is where Firefox kicks everybodies a**.
- No Home – There is no concept of homepage. The New Tab page replaces the homepage.
- No linux version yet.
- Every time i try to find one, the pros list keep getting longer.
The pros very much outweighs the cons. Being its first release, i think google has live upto its expectations. The time is near to change our web browsers folks.
